In response to the shortcomings of the classic VSG control strategy mentioned above, this paper proposes a frequency modulation control strategy with additional system active power constraints for PV-energy storage systems (hereinafter referred to as active power constraint control strategy).
The PV is participated in frequency regulation by modifying the modulation index in response to the frequency deviation. In a 1.2 kW PV system the proposed scheme was validated where only 3% of the PV output is modulated. Fig. 16 shows the control block of the modulated PV system, where the ramp rate limiter controls the PV output within 50 W/min.
The study result helps to identify the potential and impact factors in utilizing energy storage to improve frequency response in high renewable penetration power grids. Index Terms— Energy storage, frequency response, photovoltaic (PV), governor response, inertia response.
