The electric mobility market penetration in Tunisia has been slow and limited until 2021. The EV technology made its debut in August. MG Motors, a brand of British origin, has announced the first sale of an electric vehicle called “EZS” in Tunisia, opening new prospects for the Tunisian EV market, with an investment cost of 144,800 DT.
However, according to Tunisia's current infrastructure, politics, and energy situation, EV technology should be promoted to be adopted by citizens, which is the biggest challenge facing the transition process.
Customs duties on electric car recharging equipment were cut to 10%, while value added tax was reduced to 7% from January 1 to December 31, 2023, according to Article 24 of the 2023 Finance Act, published on December 23 in the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic (JORT).
In fac, as part of the electric mobility development in Tunisia, a memorandum between the National Oil Distribution Company (AGIL) and the STEG was signed to establish EV charging stations. The pilot project introduced 10 AGIL service stations of which 6 are located in the 6 largest governorates such as Tunis, Sousse, and Sfax.
The current empirical study has identified the main barriers to the spread of the electric vehicle technologies into the automotive market up to 2021. Consequently, infrastructure, charging stations, vehicle range, charging time and maintenance costs are the main factors contributing to Tunisians' reluctance to use new energy technologies.
